“ERA OF EXPLORATION”
A grand, sweeping time period of adventure and discovery in WEB3, fitting for a wide range of characters and narratives.
Aligned with Onchain’s vision of “bringing people onchain”, all characters are depicted entering through a door.
They are dressed in spacesuits – space exploration as a metaphor for the most daring humans, using most advanced tech.
Guided by DeSci knowledge, they have a deep understanding of their environment – suggestion achieved by the transparency of the helmet, which is “reflecting” the background – full immersion in web3.
50* Characters X 50 Backgrounds = 2,500 PFP’s
*These are just round numbers, proportions may vary upon request.
The distinct [STRIPED & pixelated] look make the characters instantly recognizable and memorable.
Character birth is a lot more difficult than background formation 🙂 So while we could create any number of characters, it’d be much faster to create fewer, and use more background variations, and/or add some other traits.
Cellular Automata = Pixel Art
By using Cellular Automata (with a 16-bit ruleset) textures are practically infinite. Cell-size and color are also adjustable.
For the character design I’m using a smaller “cell-size” and a specific ruleset, which creates the striped look – as a metaphor for (block) chain links. All of these are drawn by hand and are examples of style, rather than finished products.
Backgrounds are (much) easier to generate, as p5js takes care of it (same code but on auto-pilot).
The pixelated feel of the characters is voluntary, it is a personal trademark and reference to retro gaming, also hinting at the constant need for improvement as means to achieve great goals.
Sample Characters
All these folks are striking poses – suggesting energetic, joyful, playful people (in space suits). The visor (face) is transparent and so is the border – when combined with the background they create a feeling of immersion in the environment.

Generative + Handmade Approach
Using p5js, Arduino and a webcam, characters are drawn by hand (it’s generative art with a personal touch). The backgrounds are also generated with code.
Everything is based on a Cellular Automata logic.
This setup (my code and my DIY Arduino controllers) is being quite popular at events – as interactive installation art.
Not my first PFP project
While not literally PFP’s (as it’s abstract – geometric), I’ve created the (fully onchain) LiveArt membership cards – a generative collection with unique tokens (cards) that evolve dynamically.
