Generative art involves the use of an autonomous system – algorithms and computer programs to create visual and audio works that are self-contained and self-generating.

The artist sets the rules and parameters for the system, but the output is generated by the computer, resulting in a piece of art that is unpredictable and often surprising.

A unique landscape is generated each time you refresh the page.

Try the full version: Cellular Automata Horizons. You can interact with it. Pressing 1, 2 or 3 for example will change the cell size.

Generative art is not just about the end product, but also the process of creating it. It is a combination of art and technology, where the artist uses programming as a tool for artistic expression.

The outcome can be in various forms, such as images, videos, animations, and even physical objects produced by digital fabrication techniques.

Based on a grid system

Nicu’s artworks are using a grid system of X rows x Y columns, dividing the screen in ‘cells’. Each cell has its own logic and reacts to their neighbors, changing color, size and even shape (can be adjusted by the user).

Even if some of the cells appear grouped together, they know what they’re doing individually.

About Patterns

Nicu P’s approach is rooted in the exploration of natural patterns, particularly Cellular Automata and Turing Patterns.

Cellular Automata

From the ripples on a pond to the branches of a tree, the natural world is full of intricate, repeating shapes. How are these patterns created? Cellular automata is a way of modeling the behavior of simple units.

Turing Patterns

Turing patterns are a type of self-organizing pattern that emerges from the interaction of chemicals in a system. These patterns have been used to create generative art that is both beautiful and complex.

Arduino

To manipulate his generative art in real-time, Nicu is using various DIY Arduino controllers and sensors. By adjusting the parameters of the generative algorithm, an interactive, unique experience is created for the viewer.

Blockchain Art

Some of Nicu P’s work is minted as NFTs, mainly using the Tezos blockchain – known for its sustainable, energy-efficient operations and a hub for humanitarian initiatives.

By minting my works on the blockchain, the art cannot be duplicated or replicated. It also allows me to showcase my art to a wider audience, and to connect with other artists and collectors who share the passion for generative art.
